There are moments when the theory you learned years ago suddenly meets reality. Today that’s exactly what happened to me — something I’d been waiting 17 years to see.
Back in my very first dive course, in 2006, our instructors explained that the submersible pressure gauge (SPG) — one of the most essential pieces of dive gear — can, under certain conditions, “blow out”: the glass or dial face can shoot outward during a sudden pressure spike. That’s why the classic rule is to open the tank valve slowly and point the gauge down or to the side, away from your face and the people around you.
Ever since I became a dive instructor myself, I pass this rule on to every student. And every time I opened a valve, I’d smile and say: “maybe today’s the day.” For 17 years, it never happened. Until today.
What actually happened? An instructor (not a student!) opened the valve, and about half a turn in there was a loud crack — the gauge glass simply flew straight out 💥. Luckily, the gauge was pointing down and no one was hurt. It was a sharp reminder that this danger is real — and that it usually happens right on that first half-turn, when the tank pressure first meets the system.
Dive safety takeaway:
- Open the tank valve slowly and gradually, not all at once.
- Point the SPG down or to the side, away from your face.
- Do an equipment check and a buddy check before every dive.
- If something looks or sounds off — stop and check.
These small habits are the difference between a safe, enjoyable dive and an accident that could have been prevented. In the end, dive safety isn’t just a set of rules — it’s a habit.
