You’ve got your Open Water Diver card and you’re wondering what’s next. The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is the natural next step — it takes you deeper, teaches you to navigate, and turns you from a certified diver into a confident one. Here’s what the course involves, who it’s for, how long it takes and what it costs in Eilat.
What you’ll actually do
Advanced Open Water is built around five adventure dives — you learn by diving, not by sitting in a classroom. Two dives are set, and the other three are yours to choose:
- Deep dive — go beyond the 18 m Open Water limit, down to 30 m (100 ft), and learn how depth changes a dive.
- Underwater navigation — find your way around unfamiliar sites using a compass and natural references, so you’re never guessing where the exit is.
- Three adventure dives of your choice — pick from Wreck, Night, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Nitrox, Drift and more.
And on top of the standard five, we include one bonus dive — an extra dive on us, so you get even more time in the water. By the end you’ll dive deeper, navigate with confidence, and plan longer, more interesting dives safely.
Who it’s for
The only prerequisite is a PADI Open Water Diver certification (or a recognised equivalent). If you’re certified and want to go past 18 metres, explore wrecks like the Satil, or simply feel more in control underwater, this is the course for you. Not certified yet? Start with the Open Water course first — see what it costs in our guide to Open Water prices in Eilat.
How long it takes, and the theory
Plan for about 2 days. Before the course you’ll get theory materials to review at your own pace — there’s no final exam, just a few short quizzes to confirm the essentials. The rest is all in the water, alongside your instructor in small groups.
Pair it with Nitrox for more bottom time
Many divers add the Nitrox course alongside Advanced. Enriched air gives you longer bottom times, which matters most on deeper dives — and since the Deep dive goes to 30 m, Nitrox makes the whole experience even better.
Why do it in Eilat
Eilat’s clear, warm water and variety of sites make it an ideal place to advance. Your adventure dives can take you from calm coral gardens to real wrecks — including the famous Satil wreck dive, a former Israeli Navy missile boat that’s perfect for the Wreck adventure dive. (Planning where to go? Our guide to the best dive sites in Eilat covers the whole coast.)
