Ever wished your dives lasted longer — especially on a day with several dives back to back? That’s exactly what Enriched Air, or Nitrox, is for. The PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) course teaches you to dive on a gas mix with more oxygen and less nitrogen, so you get longer bottom times and safer repetitive dives. Here’s how it works, who it’s for, and what it costs in Eilat.
Why bottom time runs out
As a certified diver you already know your bottom time is limited — and the deeper you go, the shorter it gets. Dive several times in one day and each following dive gives you even less time. The reason is nitrogen: your body absorbs it as you stay underwater, and releases it on the ascent and on the surface between dives. Keeping those nitrogen levels within safe limits is what caps your time in the water.
How Nitrox helps
The idea is simple: reduce the nitrogen in the tank and increase the oxygen. With less nitrogen going in, your body absorbs less of it — so you can stay longer at depth across multiple dives in a day. On a place like Eilat, where you want to linger over the coral reefs, that extra bottom time makes a real difference.
Why you need the course
Nitrox is powerful, but it comes with one important catch: using the wrong mix at the wrong depth can be dangerous. That’s exactly what the Nitrox Specialty course prevents. It’s a mostly theory course where you learn to:
- Match the right Nitrox mix to the right depth.
- Analyse the oxygen percentage of your mix yourself, before every dive.
- Understand the special equipment Nitrox diving requires.
With the course and certification done, you’ll dive Nitrox safely — and you’ll be able to rent Nitrox tanks and enjoy more, longer dives per day.
How long it takes
The course takes one day. You can do it as pure theory, or combine it with dives on Nitrox — whichever you prefer. And since it’s a theory-focused course, you can study the PADI eLearning on your own before you start, so on the day itself you’re ready to go.
Who it’s for
Nitrox is for divers who already hold an Advanced Open Water certification (or a recognised equivalent) and want more time underwater. It pairs perfectly with the deeper dives Advanced opens up — the deeper you go, the more that extra bottom time matters. You can even take Nitrox together with your Advanced course and do both at once. Not there yet? Start with the Advanced Open Water course — and add Nitrox to it.
Why do it in Eilat
Eilat is the ideal place to get the most out of Nitrox. The reefs here are alive and endlessly explorable, and longer bottom times mean more time among the coral and marine life on every dive. (See where to spend that extra time in our guide to the best dive sites in Eilat.)
